T Trading Standards have today been informed of a cold calling scammer who claims for £10 he can stop all telephone cold calls. The scammer telephoned an 80 year old woman stating he worked for BT and made the claim that for a one off payment of £10 she would no longer receive cold calls. He then asked how she paid her bill and when she said direct debit he asked for her bank details to take the payment. The woman then ended the call. You are advised to not engage in conversation with cold callers and to end the call immediately. Trading Standards advise you to never give out personal details over the telephone. To prevent cold callers you can register with the telephone preference service free of charge by calling 0845 703 4599. To prevent silent calls you can call silent call guard on 0844 372 2325. A bogus email is in circulation about an alleged postal scam which asks people to call a premium rate number to enable a parcel to be delivered. The email also references Trading Standards and PhonepayPlus, the regulatory body for all premium rate charged telecommunications services, in an attempt to make itself look genuine.
This chain email refers to a scam that was shut down by PhonepayPlus in December 2005. Because this service was stopped, you do not need to contact the Royal Mail, Trading Standards or PhonepayPlus about this service, and should not forward the email on.
There has been a spate of emails recently containing urgent warnings that recipients are asked to forward on. Often these warnings are untrue, and the real aim is to get as many people’s email addresses as possible to send out future spam. Staffordshire Trading Standards Officers advise consumers to check before forwarding on warning emails.

Staffordshire Trading Standards Officers are warning consumers to be on their guard when dealing with strangers over the phone after
it has been reported that rogue traders have been targeting people in the Staffordshire area using this method.
One resident received a call from a man on a ‘withheld number’ who claimed he was calling on behalf of her gas provider
because they needed to gain access to her home to change her gas meter.
Thankfully the lady was suspicious and refused him access to her home and called her real gas provider to check this story out.
They confirmed that no work had been planned to replace her meter.
It is ALWAYS worth checking out that a caller is who they say they are by hanging up and calling the company back on the
number given in the telephone book, and not the one the caller gives you. If in doubt just say no!
